Steven Scott. Point of Departure. 2012. Dual Giclee print

Point of Departure consists of two digital images derived from a monochrome photograph of a waterway in Hamburg harbour. These images are made up of alternate vertical strips of the original photograph and are designed to be installed at 90 degrees to each other so that the vanishing point of the waterway seems to recede in different directions. A suggestion of a stereoscopic effect is implied by these dual perspectives, enhanced by a subtle lateral shifting of the elements within each picture. Each image appears to be the complement of the other but, in fact, carries slightly different and conflicting visual information.
Point of Departure explores levels of assumption and intention involved in the process of looking, whilst alluding to notions of options and life choices, referencing those made by Sutcliffe in his move to Hamburg to play music and his subsequent choice to pursue visual art.
